A close win against Somerset Ladies Past Captains

In a match that is notorious for being hard fought, Somerset Golf Captains were victorious with a 5&3 win over the Somerset Ladies Past Captains.

Somerset pride is obviously very important to both teams!

First out were Captain of Captains Marcus Woodward & Rob Hirons playing the formidable Claire Biggs & Di Yates. We were fortunate to begin well, but Claire & Di fought back with the balance only falling Somerset Golf Captains way towards the end, resulting in a 4&2 win. Great company & a great game.

Following behind were President Iain Robertson & Peter Dawson with partners Heather Kerr-Wilber & Jan Scilly. Peter played the game of his life with four birdies & Robbo joined in when required. Their opponents worked hard to keep the game alive but finally saw defeat on the 17th.

Match 3 was equally enjoyable & played in great spirit. George Davis & Steve Welch squeezed a 2&1 win past ‘Par 3 Queen’ Gwen Cavill & her partner Chris Baker.

Angela Baker & Andy Carter had a great match with Sue Acland & Bernie Hatcher. Again, there were multiple birdies scored with the result eventually falling Somerset Golf Captain’s way.

At this point the tide turned, thanks to a sterling effort by Susie Gibbons & Sue. SGC’s Glyn Sewell & Ian Suttle admitted the ladies deserved the 5&4 win having found themselves four down at the turn, after playing some good, & some less good, golf.

The generous donator of the new trophy Brian Reeves, with Martin Morgan followed on with Sheila Claxton & Paulette. It was a close game played in great spirit. Unfortunately for us. two birdies on the 16th meant the SLPC romped home with a 2&1 victory.

Chris Reed & Geoff Rooke enjoyed another back & forth game with Jules Bishop & Jill Carter. Chris & Geoff made the most of the shots they had, & in the end, won 3&2.

The final match, played between Past Secretary Clive Stilwell & Match Manager Bob Acland with opponents Yvonne Bate & Eliza Vail was an uphill struggle. Yvonne & Eliza were out the blocks like greyhounds, building a five-hole lead by the turn with a succession of net birdies. Bob & Clive battled back to being just one down on the 15th but in the end, they couldn’t stop the defeat.

The game was played at Wheathill Golf Club, on a sunny but breezy day. After the match everyone enjoyed good food in the friendly surroundings.
